Mesothelioma and Asbestos
Most cases of malignant mesothelioma are related to occupational exposure to asbestos. Typically, exposure is for a prolonged period of time (several years), and usually involves working with or near asbestos products. Therefore, those who work with or around asbestos, and products containing asbestos, are at risk for contracting mesothelioma asbestos lung cancer.
The most common commercial asbestos is chrysotile asbestos. Asbestos is found in a variety of applications including, insulation, construction supplies, brake linings, and for filtering chemicals.
The latency period between asbestos exposure and mesothelioma development is 35-40 years, and as a result, the number of mesothelioma patients has continued to rise despite a decrease in asbestos production.
